Cable Testing by VLF AC Hi Pot Test Set

Very low frequency (VLF) AC (0.1 Hz or <) voltage testing has been used to test medium-voltage cables for several years. Experience and studies indicate that VLF is suitable for testing both new and service-aged power cables. Unfortunately, this type of testing only accounts for locally restricted faults, such as mechanical damage, cavities and individual advanced water trees to be detected. The new standard is IEEE 400.2™, "Guide for Field Testing of Shielded Power Cable Systems Using Very Low Frequency (VLF)," which addresses concerns when field testing shielded, medium-voltage cables related to the use of cables having extruded dielectric insulation.

DC testing can cause service-aged cables with solid dielectric insulation to fail after they return to service. This guide provides information needed to avoid this by testing with VLF. It describes withstand and diagnostic tests and offers charts on how effective VLF testing is for various cable insulation problems.

Cable & Sheath Fault Location

Cable failures can be both disruptive and expensive resulting in the overall lifetime cost of the asset increasing. The prompt restoration of the supply following a fault is normally the main priority for operational staff, although this should be done in conjunction with a failure management procedure to ensure no evidence is lost and a
correct diagnosis and mechanism of failure is identified. This information can be invaluable in preventing further failures.

Identifying the location of an underground cable fault can often present some difficulty, in addition to delaying the re-instrument of critical plant and processes. Over many years a number of fault location methods and technologies have evolved making the task easier and more efficient, reducing the number of excavations, joints, lost time and ultimately unnecessary expenditure.
